Varicose veins

When veins bulge, throb or ache, you probably have varicose veins. Veins that are not doing their job of transporting blood back to the heart cannot be repaired. If left untreated they can progress to skin deterioration, eczema, cellulitis, venous ulcers, bleeding, and blood clots.

Your treatment

Varicose vein ablation using a strong medical adhesive is a non-surgical treatment. Tiny, controlled amounts of medical-grade adhesive are injected into the vein via a thin tube, using a special dispenser. All the while progress is monitored onscreen using ultrasound. Once the adhesive is in place along the vein, the surgeon puts pressure on the leg to seal it; the adhesive and the vein are eventually absorbed.

Sclerotherapy – this is a vein irritant that is injected into the vein to make the walls stick together. This means the vein can’t fill with blood. Sclerotherapy is often used in conjunction with varicose vein ablation above.

Spider veins

Whether it’s just a couple of unsightly spider veins or clusters of them, you might be interested in treatment to reduce their appearance. The good news is skin laser therapy from Laser Aesthetics can help reduce and fade your spider veins.

Facial veins and capillaries

Red and purple capillaries on your cheeks, nose and chin can be unsightly. These, and other conditions, such as rosacea and sun damage, can be reliably treated with skin laser therapy.

Your treatment

If you have lots of spider veins, we will often recommend an ultrasound to find out the underlying cause. Laser therapy can help reduce the spider veins and improve their appearance. Some will disappear as the laser pulses over the skin; others may take longer to improve. Laser therapy can also help reduce some facial skin conditions, including broken capillaries and redness or rosacea. The laser feels like an elastic band is flicking your skin.

Carotid arterial surgery

Carotid artery narrowing may be associated with an increased risk of stroke, mini-stroke or eye problems (amaurosis fugax). If your carotid arteries have caused this sort of problem, carotid artery surgery will often be recommended (carotid endarterectomy). Sometimes, all that’s needed is for us to monitor narrowed carotid arteries with regular ultrasound scans.

All patients with carotid narrowing caused by atherosclerosis should be on ‘best medical therapy’, ’ie, low-dose aspirin (or similar medication), a statin and good blood pressure control. If you smoke, you need to give up smoking.

Your treatment

If you have had a stroke, mini-stroke or eye problems caused by your carotid narrowing, surgery is recommended (carotid endarterectomy). If you need treatment this usually involves a 1-2 night hospital stay. We’ll discuss your treatment plan with you and our nurse will be in touch about a week before to answer any of your questions.
Procedure Carotid Artery Disease
Procdure Aortic Aneurysm

Aortic aneurysm intervention

Most aneurysms grow slowly and we can monitor their growth with regular ultrasound scans that take around one hour. Once an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is 5cm wide in women, 5.5cm wide in men, a stent or surgery may be needed.

Your treatment

If your aortic aneurysm requires intervention, this may be with a minimally-invasive stent (EVAR – endovascular aortic aneurysm repair) or by open surgical repair. Ultimately, treatment is determined by a number of factors, including the type of aneurysm you have. Richard Evans will discuss the best option for you and our nurse will be in touch about a week before to answer any of your questions.

Leg artery procedures & surgery

If you have cramping when walking it may indicate leg artery problems (intermittent claudication). In more severe cases this can lead to pain and ulcers. In milder cases of claudication, we will recommend regular ultrasound scans. If walking becomes difficult or when there is pain or ulcers, minimally-invasive intervention may be recommended, including angioplasty and stent or a surgical arterial bypass.

All patients with leg artery narrowing caused by atherosclerosis should be on ‘best medical therapy’ ie, low-dose aspirin (or similar medication), a statin and good blood pressure control. If you smoke, you need to give up smoking.

Your treatment

If your problem is more severe we may recommend a stent or an arterial bypass operation. A stent is generally a day-case procedure under local anaesthetic. A bypass operation usually requires a general anaesthetic and a 3-5 day hospital stay. Our nurse will be in touch about a week before to answer any of your questions.

Procedure Lower Limb Arterial Disease
No Sweating Armpit Square

Excessive sweating of the palms and armpits (hyperhidrosis)

Hyperhidrosis is usually a problem that mainly affects older teenagers and young adults. It can be embarrassing, cause social anxiety and cause difficulty with everyday actions, such as handshakes and even holding a pen. Treatment options range from strong antiperspirants, medications, Botox or Dysport (botulinum toxin) injections, through to surgical treatments (thoracoscopic sympathectomy). We will discuss the best option if you have hyperhidrosis.

Shopping for compression stockings

If you have puffy legs, varicose veins, venous leg ulcers, DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or are on your feet all day you might benefit from wearing compression stockings.

We offer free measuring because it’s important you get the best fit.

Ours are medical-grade with graduated compression – the pressure at the ankle is greater than at the knee to encourage blood or fluid to flow from your legs to your heart. We recommend class 1 grade for most to the knee, because they’re strong, yet easy to put on and are effective.

If you know your size shop online.
